Golden Snitch Pinata
Made this as a commission for some cool people I met at the Strathcona Blocks Party who wanted something a little different to reflect their shared interests.
The project is nearly entirely made of cardboard with the central part being made up of 100+ stacked circles to make a hollow sphere shape. The wings have wire through them to make them posable, curving them slightly allowed me to create a sense of ‘flying’ movement. To create the ornamentation I cut and draped scrap cardboard over the sphere similar to how you would with fabric and then transfered these cut shapes to Ilustrator to create my files.
While the original object it’s based on is of course from the Harry Potter movies the files for this were designed entirely by me in 2D format (with some help from a online sphere generator).
All cardboard was recycled from various sizes of boxes and shipping materials and cut using a laser cutter.
The finished piece is around 1.5 metres or 5 foot wide.
